Gegam Kacherian uses painting as an act of deep remembering and remembrance. This artwork was completed in 2017 for the Armenian Genocide Memorial.

Kacherian’s canvas creates a surreal landscape of teals and blacks, referring abstractly to land and sky, gravity and flight, up and upside down. Symbolic references to Armenia float among painterly marks, colored swirls, and smooth gradients, as objects and colors move forward and backward in imaginary space. The act of combining abstraction and cultural symbolism creates a dream-like image, referring simultaneously to beauty, loss, nostalgia, timelessness, and reverence.
