THE CONTEMPORARY COLLECTION @ GCC is a diverse selection of contemporary artworks on permanent display at Glendale Community College. The Collection was assembled between 2016 and 2021 and comprises artworks in the Administration building in addition to three murals throughout campus.
The Contemporary Collection’s purpose is to give direct access to original artworks to students, staff, and faculty and to enrich the artistic and cultural atmosphere of our community. The Contemporary Collection extends GCC’s commitment to being a premier destination for arts and culture in Glendale and greater Los Angeles. All of the artists featured in The Contemporary Collection live and work in Los Angeles and actively exhibit at noted cultural venues throughout the region. Their work uses artmaking to explore ideas that students will also encounter in other academic disciplines.
The Collection includes work in an array of artistic media, including painting, photography, performance, printmaking, sculpture, design, and architecture. One objective of The Contemporary Collection is to feature artworks that experiment innovatively with materials and scale - artworks that must be experienced in person to be fully appreciated.
Thematically, The Contemporary Collection includes several topical currents important to our community, including environmental sustainability, cultural diversity and equity, the inclusion of women in arts and sciences, and the understanding and remembering of collective history.
